Sam Jeffs’ career journey is a powerful example of how veterans can successfully transition into new civilian roles — and how targeted support can make all the difference.
After 10 years as a submarine navigator and Deputy Special Operations Officer in the Royal Navy, Sam faced the common challenge of leaving the military and finding a new career path. Despite his broad skills and experience, he struggled with the “chicken and egg” problem many veterans face: needing qualifications to get experience, but needing experience to gain qualifications.
His breakthrough came when he joined the SaluteMyJob Pathways Programme as part of the Click Start initiative, enrolling in a free ethical hacking course with Abertay University. This opportunity sparked his passion for cyber security and equipped him with practical skills like ethical hacking and admin-level system access.
Now working towards advanced certifications and planning to launch a cyber security business focused on supporting smaller organisations, Sam is also committed to employing and mentoring fellow veterans. His goal is to build a supportive ecosystem that helps veterans translate military skills into civilian careers and rebuild the community connections many miss after service.
Sam’s advice to veterans starting in cyber security:
-
Say yes to learning opportunities—embrace new challenges
-
Take the first step, even if unsure
-
Keep learning beyond your comfort zone
-
Use free or affordable training programmes like Click Start
And his message to employers:
Be willing to take a chance on veterans—they bring valuable skills, perspective, and dedication, even if their background isn’t a perfect match on paper.
SaluteMyJob continues to collaborate with organisations like Abertay University to open doors for veterans and build pathways into growth sectors like cyber security.
